TAKING FLIGHT: MAX'S SCHOLARSHIP STORY OF PASSION AND DETERMINATION

For Max, a recent graduate from Surrey, aviation has been a lifelong companion — a passion sparked in childhood and now fuelled by opportunity. This year, through The Air League and proudly supported by The Flyer Watch Company, that dream took another step towards reality when Max was awarded a flying scholarship at Booker Aviation.
“Aviation has been part of my life for as long as I can remember,” Max began. “My grandfather had a successful career in both the RAF and as a commercial pilot, and from a young age he would take me to airshows such as Farnborough. At school, I joined the RAF CCF and spent countless hours flying on a PC simulator I had built myself.”
While studying at Durham University, Max became a member of the Northumbrian University Air Squadron — the moment where his love for aviation truly took flight. But it was only recently that he discovered becoming a commercial pilot was possible, despite his eyesight. Having graduated last summer, he is now working on a graduate scheme at McLaren Automotive, saving towards a PPL(A) and eventually a modular, self-sponsored ATPL.

Grabbing the Opportunity
“As a recent graduate, I was eager to get as much flying experience as possible, but the cost of training has made this difficult,” Max explained. “When I came across The Air League, I thought I’d give it a go… and I am so glad I did!”
When the email arrived confirming the scholarship, the first thing he did was call his grandfather. “I was absolutely thrilled. On a personal level, I was incredibly proud to have been selected, especially knowing how competitive these scholarships are.”
Learning from the Best
Max’s experience at Booker Aviation has been nothing short of positive. “Fantastic — everyone has been so welcoming and helpful. The instructors are brilliant, and I’m really looking forward to my remaining lessons.”
His very first flight was unforgettable. “After so many hours on my PC simulator, actually being in the air was amazing. The view from the cockpit was incredible — there is nothing like it — and I felt well prepared.”
A typical day on the scholarship blended study and flying. “We’d start with ground study, then have a pre-flight briefing, complete the aircraft checks, and fly the lesson. Afterwards, we’d shut down, debrief, and log the flight — then start studying for the next one!”
Challenges and Triumphs
One challenge stood out: adjusting to the left-hand seat and a yoke instead of a joystick. “It took time, but practice makes perfect!”
When asked about a favourite moment so far, Max’s answer was simple: “Honestly, everything! It’s just been such a pleasure to be back in the cockpit and flying again.”
Beyond flying skills, the scholarship has had a profound impact. “This opportunity has been fantastic and given me real purpose. It has allowed me to continue my journey in aviation — something that I thought might not have been possible before I found The Air League.”

Looking Ahead
The motivation to continue is stronger than ever. “My goal is to work towards my PPL(A), and to eventually become a commercial pilot. I want to reach Solo standard within the next year and keep progressing. I’m also focused on succeeding in my current role — then we’ll see where life takes me, but flying will definitely be part of it.”
Max also recognises the importance of sponsorship in making opportunities like this possible. “Without the support from companies like The Flyer Watch Company, hundreds of young people might never get the chance to experience aviation first-hand. They are essential in helping people take their first steps into the industry, especially given the high costs of training.”
And his advice for future applicants? “Just do it! You’ll regret it if you don’t. Put in the work and time for the application and the interview — this is such an incredible opportunity.”
